The concept comes out of thermodynamics, which deals with the transfer of heat energy within a system. The Quit India campaign started when members of Congress were angry and frustrated with the British Labour government, which led the leaders of the Congress to announce the Quit India campaign headed by Gandhi. Gandhi launched the Quit India campaign during WW2 because of the failure of the Cripps mission. In source A Gandhi says how can we fight for democracy when we have not got it ourselves. He is only thinking of this from one point of view. If he had thought about it from another perspective he would know that the Indians were not fighting for Britain but for India. The Japanese were on the borders of India and could invade it. Then the Indian people could forget the question of independence. But if they helped Britain fight the Japanese then they could start talking about independence as was promised to them. He then says I do not want Japan to win. How could that be possible when he is telling his people not to fight and the Japanese are at the borders of India. Lastly he says I am sure that Britain cannot win unless the Indian people become free. This is like a threat; maybe that is why he got arrested the very next day and put into prison until the war was over. 2. The evidence of source C partly supports the evidence of sources A and B. Muhammad Ali Jinnah made the statement (source C) in 1940, the year he demanded the creation of Pakistan and the time when he had the support of the British. He was making the point that Hindus and Muslims and their aims were fundamentally different except for one thing British rule-and the common desire to get rid of it. To him Muslims were a completely different race who were only helping the Hindus to be free of British rule so that they could get what Jinnah, their leader, was aiming for. Which was a new state carved out of India for the Muslims and to be known as Pakistan. How useful are sources D and E in Helping you to understand why the policy of the British Government towards independence for India changed after the Second World War? Source D is very useful as it is a statement from a member of the Labour government sent to India on a mission to make India independent. Source D shows us that after WW2 Britain could no longer keep control of a large country like India as it was fought to a standstill during the war and needed to think more about Britains recovery than any other country. It shows that Britain wanted to get out of India as soon as possible quite obviously impossible was to decide to continue our responsibility indefinitely, stated Cripps. He says he has two alternatives; the first one, strengthen British control in India could not possibly happen because at the same time he says we were demobilising the British armed forces from India and the East. Source E is also very useful as it is an eyewitness account of Direct Action Day by a Briton who presumably is not biased. It tells us that the situation in India was well out of the control of the British and the situation was deteriorating by the minute. If from one protest and one place people from one religion can kill people from another, you could imagine what would happen all over India if Britain did not do anything. Source E shows communal violence was escalating. You could see a crop of one religion or another being laid on their faces and being beheaded into the river the river was literally choked with dead bodies. The British knew they had to give India independence but the question that was delaying this was how to give independence. 4. Use sources F and G, and your own knowledge, to help you explain why India was partitioned in 1947. India was partitioned in 1947 as a last alternative. After years of talks and the failure of the Cripps mission it was quite obvious that there was no way you could get the Muslims and Hindus to live to together peacefully. The two people had nothing in common but their nationality. Their religion, language, writing and their way of life were different. For example, the slaughtering of cows by Muslims was offensive to Hindus who consider the cow a sacred animal. The situation in India in the 1940s was just chaos, it had turned into a civil war which the Viceroys government was powerless to stop. When it appeared the Congress had no desire to share power with the Muslim League at the central government, Jinnah declared August 16 1946, Direct Action Day, which was meant to be a peaceful demonstration but it bought about communal violence, rioting and massacres in many paces in the north. Source F, a photograph taken in Calcutta on Direct Action Day shows, a Hindu temple set on fire presumably by Muslims and in response you can see the police using tear gas to drive the protesters back. This Direct Action Day made people aware of the vast differences between Hindus and Muslims. Gandhi was horrified by Direct Action Day because that was completely against his aim, he had wanted to achieve a united India but without any violence. Earlier in 1920 he said that by self-rule he meant two things, self-government for India and self-control. He believed the second was the way to achieve the first. So he accepted Jinnahs idea of Pakistan reluctantly. Source G is a report written by the commander-in-chief of the Indian Army, on the independence day of Pakistan. He says the army and police are powerless to stop the violence as the police were defecting and joining in the violence thus making it impossible to get it under control. The most disturbing feature here is the defection of the police who are mostly Muslim. Communal violence in Calcutta and other cities still remained because people were furious that they had to leave their lifes work behind, so they took up arms against the other religion. To try and stop this violence, Gandhi, instead of going to the independence ceremony of India, stayed in Calcutta, where he predicted the most violence would be and attempted to stop it. The area that was going to be hard to partition was Punjab as there were three inhabitants of that area, Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus. The Sikhs as well as the Hindus didnt like the Muslims so they started armed rebellion against the Muslims. Source G says the strife here was started by Sikhs which are carrying out raids on Muslim villages one band is reputed to have killed 200 Muslims in one village. The British had to partition India for they could no longer stop the communal violence, the police were defecting and joining in the violence, the army was powerless to stop this, it was madness and chaos everywhere, there was no stability and no law and order. 5. The partition of India in 1947 could not have been avoided. Use the sources and your own knowledge to explain whether you agree with this view. There are two answers Yes or No. Im going to explain both points and come up with a conclusion, which will be my own view. The idea of partitioning India was a really late development and there had been some hope of an undivided India, with a government consisting of three tiers along basically the same lines as the borders of India and Pakistan at the time of Partition. However, Congress rejection of the interim government set up under this Cabinet Mission Plan in 1942 convinced the leaders of the Muslim League that compromise was impossible and partition was the only course to take. Therefore the partitioning of India could have been avoided, had Jawaharlal Nehru accepted the interim governments cabinet mission. It became inevitable only after Nehru rejected the interim governments cabinet mission plan after winning majority seats in the provincial elections of 1937. The British had followed a divide-and-rule policy in India. They categorised people according to religion and viewed and treated them as separate from each other. The government laws passed in 1909, 1919 and 1935 had reserved representatives for Muslims thus creating an idea that Muslims were different from Hindus. In 1935 the British government passed the India Act that proposed the transformation of India into eleven provincial states. The legislation also gave greater authority to the provincial assemblies to establish governments for questions falling within their own region. After the 1937 elections Jinnah expected Congress to co-operate with the League by giving it a share of government posts in some provinces. However, the League had won less than 5 per cent of the total Muslim vote, Congress therefore refused to give the League anything. Jinnah felt betrayed and went back to transforming the League into a stronger position to bargain with Congress. The Muslim League gained power also due to the Congress. The Congress banned any support for the British during the Second World War. However the Muslim League pledged its full support. The Civil Disobedience Movement and the consequent withdrawal of the Congress party from politics also helped the League gain power, as they formed strong ministries in the provinces that had large Muslim populations. At the same time, the League actively campaigned to gain more support from the Muslims in India especially under the guidance of dynamic leaders like Jinnah. With the Congress out of the way and the full support of the British, Jinnah in 1940 went for the extreme demand to bargain with congress, which was a new state carved out of India for the Muslims to be known as Pakistan. Even the viceroy at that time supported this idea to some extent. He didnt really think he would get it but it was a strong position to bargain from. He himself favoured a united India with strong provincial government so that Muslims would have more say whereas the congress wanted Strong central government, that was the only thing making Jinnah more determined to get Pakistan. So from this point of view India could have stayed as one if only M.L and I.N.C accepted the Cripps mission. And maybe Gandhi might never have been assassinated. From another and more moral point of view the partitioning of India at all costs could not have been avoided. Tension between Muslims and Hindus was unbearable as you can see from the sources I mentioned earlier. In source H, a book about events in the Punjab in September 1947, it describes a train journey from India to Pakistan. Hundreds of Sikhs attacked the train and My wife, who was seven months pregnant, was pressed on the belly resulting in an abortion a few hours later. The train started only when nobody was left to kill. This describes just one train journey from India to Pakistan so you could imagine what would have happened in residential areas of India. In source F you can see in the photograph that from one protest in one area in one day caused this much riot and bloodshed then you would have to keep these two people apart which in the long term would have to lead to partition. On the same day we have an eye-witness (Source E) account of what happened and to furthermore prove my point that India should have been partition, you should read the following statements from an unbiased Briton. You could see a crop of one religion or another being beheaded into the river. After the riot the river was literally choked with dead bodies. So coming to a conclusion I say the British did the right thing in partitioning India. They left India divided in two. The two countries were founded on the basis of religion, with Pakistan as an Islamic state and India as a secular one. India should have been partitioned because that would have been in the interests of both people.

The current method of hiring department managers is similar to the one used for store associates. Tanglewood is looking to have a more efficient policy for screening. They would like to create a good sequence of staffing procedures by creating a selection plan for the department manager position as well as building a structured interviewing format which would include both situational and behavioral questions. A selection plan establishes an understanding of the job so you can hire the most qualified applicant. The plan lays out the major responsibilities of the job, identifies what KSAOs are needed to perform the job, and identifies the most effective selection procedures to use. INADEQUATE KSAO MEASURES There are a couple of inadequacies as far as the KSAO measurement is concerned. Those are the knowledge of legal Precepts and skill in analysis of financial and operational data. Both these KSAOs are not sufficiently measured during the selection process. It is essential for the department manager to be knowledgeable about the legal aspects concerning the retail business. The department managers in addition to having knowledge of legal aspects of the business need to have some kind of financial skills as well. When we look at two of KSAOs, t hat is â€Å"Knowledge of Organizational policies and practices†and â€Å"Knowledge of Retail management policies and practices†, we can consider two options. One is that the applicant should be knowledgeable about basic Organizational and Retail management policies and practices. Second is that if he is an external hire, he cannot be expected to know the Tanglewood’s Organizational and retail policies and practices. Only an internal hire would know that. As a result, we have marked the KSAO â€Å"Knowledge of Organizational policies and practices†and â€Å"Knowledge of Retail management policies and practices†as both â€Å"Yes†and â€Å"No†. â€Å"Yes†to be aware of basic Organizational and Retail management policies and practices, and â€Å"No†to the need to know Tanglewood’s Organizational and retail policies and practices. Tanglewood uses various methods to measure the KSAOs needed for the position of store manager. This position needs Behavioral KSAOs which measure soft skills which are the attitudes and approaches the applicants take to their work, such as a ability to collaborate on team projects or the ability to communicate orally with a broad range of individuals. Hence it is very important that the store manager possesses skills like sound decision making and communication skills. Other KSAOs necessary for the selection should be weighed depending on their importance to the job and as to whether they can be further enhanced by training on the job. Following a standardized selection process can help recruit the best candidate to achieve Tanglewood’s goals and maintain its corporate culture.

The world we live in is growing more distant and uncaring every day. Technology lures us in with promises of convenience and proceeds to separate us from personal attention, and the personal attention that we do get is often cold and indifferent. ATMs, Internet shopping and electronic checkout at the supermarket, all designed so that we can go through an entire day without having to face anyone. Even school research projects can be done entirely in front of a computer screen. While downloading music, checking your e-mail and instant-messaging your friends, you can find all that latest information on poverty, starvation and worldwide- epidemics. Every time we come together as a class we defy this new trend, and we have flourished in our adversity of it. A wealth of humanity, we share our ideas, our stories, our hopes and our dreams. We make lasting friendships and we clash in heated disagreements. We learn to listen to one another, building on our understanding of literature and history through others' observations and reactions. Why is it that we always start talking when the teacher turns their back? Why is it that we stay out in the hall chatting with one another until the second that - or a few minutes after - the bell rang? Why do we all know the story line to Dawson's Creek, even though only a few of us watched it? Why is it that Ms. Callaghan congratulated our class on keeping up lively discussion and a high energy up to the very last days of the school year? We crave contact, we crave each other's company, because more and more it is being taken away by what is convenient. All of us have helped each other evolve by taking part in human experience, sharing our differences. We have state-bound athletes and we have state-bound mathletes. We have Nate- squared, el Presidente and a human Swan. Our class has individuals who have already devoted themselves to a profession: kindergarten teachers, doctors, veterinarians, and in our Salutatorian's case: a door-to-door salesman. Because we are so diverse and because we love sharing this diversity, we have become strong. Soon many of us will be taking part in the formation of new classes. Despite what your parents may have said, the most important thing you will do at college will not be hitting the books or acing a test. It will be strengthening your personality - your individuality - through new friendships, new disagreements, new environments and new experiences.

Explain the purpose of the main characters, minor characters and the chorus in Antigone. (30 marks) Essay
All characters which feature in Sophocles’ play Antigone play an important role somehow; mainly conveying a certain moral or theme. The major characters portray the main themes such as loyalty, whilst some of the minor characters and the chorus explore the theme of prophecy and fate. Antigone is one of/the main character in the play named after herself. However it is debatable whether she is the main character due to the fact that the majority of the play revolves around Creon and his actions, and end in him being alone whilst Antigone has died. Throughout the play she defines the loyalty to the Gods rather than civil obedience- and is the only character to do so. Immediately, Antigone is portrayed by Sophocles as a defiant and important character due to the fact that she is located outside the palace, a place where a Greek woman would not be found unescorted by a male presence. An ancient Greek audience would automatically assume that Antigone and her sister Ismene who is also outside with her were poor, prostitutes or slaves, yet we quickly find out she is neither, leaving us with the first impressions that Antigone is willing to defy the rules and does not fit normal woman conventions in the ancient Greek era. The fact that Creon is clearly astounded when he sees Antigone is responsible for the burial of Polynices against his will clearly shows to the reader that it is unusual for the average woman in ancient Greek society to break from the norms and defy the rules, which is supported by the fact that Athenian men believed that the best women were the ones that were heard the least. The quote â€Å"You bring this woman†¦?†(Line 375); which is said to the Sentry after bringing Antigone before Creon; shows that Creon is confused that it is a woman that has had the bravery to go against the laws he had set. Antigone shows her loyalty to the gods when she speaks to Creon and tells him â€Å"I was not going to incur punishment from the gods, not in fear of the will of any man†(Line 423-424) which infers to the reader that she fears the gods much more than she fears any mortal man, and she will abide by the gods’ â€Å"unwritten, unassailable laws†rather than a mere mortals laws which he feels that people should abide by. This shows a clear devotion to the gods as she is giving herself up and admits to the crimes against the state, yet is not taken back by the promise of death as she knows that what she has done is for the gods’ satisfaction. In addition, we see that Antigone is extremely loyal to her family and is willing to sacrifice her life for the good of her brother, as the ancient Greeks believed that if you did not receive the correct burial then you would roam the afterlife forever and never be in peace (it was also seen as very disrespectful towards the dead and the family of the dead). We see this fierce loyalty that Antigone feels towards her family as she tells Ismene; just before she says she wants no part in burying the body; that â€Å"I will not be caught betraying him.†(Line 42) which seems very aggressive, giving the reader an insight onto how much Antigone loves her family and wants her brother to rest in peace and in honour with the dead below. Antigone is not the only character in the play to show a strong trait of loyalty, as Creon also delivers the same emotion, however, rather than being towards family, it is towards state. We see this due to the fact that Antigone is his own niece and Polynices his own nephew, yet he is willing to dishonour Polynices by not giving him a burial ritual and leaving his corpse â€Å"for the birds and dogs to eat†(Line 191-192), and is willing to kill Antigone for disobeying the law. Creon is also considered the most important character in Sophocles’ Antigone, mainly due to the fact that the gods retribution is directed upon him, meaning that he is left alone as his family are all dead, showing his importance as the play revolves around him in the end. Similarly to Antigone, Creon is shown as disobedient, yet to the gods and not the law. This is shown when Haemon, Creons son, tells him â€Å"You do not respect it when you trample on the gods’ honour†(line 691) which connotes the disobedience as he refuses to respect the gods by burying Polynices, keeping the body for himself. Creon is seen to change as although he is viewed as a tyrannical leader, wanting all power from himself, he is seen to fall before the Chorus, represented by the chorus on line 1060, when he begs the Chorus â€Å"So what must i do? Tell me! I will obey.†, showing he now is willing to listen to the people, although we know it is too late for things to change for Creon. Creons son, Haemon, changes much like his father, firstly agreeing with Creon and siding with him on not burying Polynices, yet begins to change his views and eventually rallies with the people who desire the burial of Antigones brother. The messenger tells Eurydice â€Å"Corpse lies embracing corpse. The poor man had won his rites of marriage in the house of Hades.†(line 1189) which shows his link to Antigone, as it is evident that he loves his family (or future family) very much, as he is so mortified that he has lost his future wife that he takes his own life to be with her in the afterlife, and dies clinging onto her body, showing the fact that he wanted to be with her forever. Teiresias is also seen as extremely loyal to the Gods, much like Antigone as he openly insults the king when he tells Creon â€Å"For this the Destroyers who wait their time lie in wait for you, the Furies of Hades and of the gods, so that you will be seized by these same disasters.†telling him that he will face a painful death and afterlife, sparing no detail in order to portray the gods wrath. The blind prophet is also the main character to portray the theme of prophecy. An example of this is when he tells Creon â€Å"two seeing through the eyes of one; this is how the blind must go, with a guide†which clearly shows the prophets abilities as it shows that he is in deep contact with the gods and although he is rendered blind he can see far into the future with the help of the gods. Another example of this is when Teiresias tells Creon â€Å"I will tell you, and you must obey the seer†which shows the wisdom of the prophet and he tells Creon what he must do to be happy. Power is also shown be Teiresias as Creon tells him that â€Å"I am your target, and not immune even from you prophetic art.†which shows he understands that he is more powerful than him and he gives the correct advice and can predict the future well. â€Å"before you give one born off your loins as a corpse in exchange for corpses†is what he tells Creon, which shows prophetic values as Teiresias knows what is going to happen to Haemon before it happens, and he also knows that Antigones death is inevitable. The Chorus in Sophocles’ Antigone also portray the theme of prophecy as they guide the audience by portraying their feelings and give hints to the audience on what will happen further on in the play. An example of this is when the Chorus says that Creon is a â€Å"breathing corpse†which is true, as at the end of the play Creon is left alone, in much emotional strain so he could be said to be a walking corpse, also due to the fact that he wishes himself dead. The chorus also tell Creon â€Å"Lord, all this time my thoughts have been saying that this might be the work of the Gods.†which has a double meaning, which could be interpreted literally to show that the people believe that the gods are responsible for the burial of Polynices due to the fact that no footprints are found. Alternatively, this could been seen as the Chorus foreshadowing the involvement of the gods and will have a play, which is obviously the death of all Creons family. Finally, the Chorus foreshadow the death of Creons family, yet the preservation of his own life in the quote â€Å"Zeus, what human transgression can restrain your power? All-conquering sleep cannot master it†which shows that he will not defeat the gods, and will be kept alive after all of his family are gone as a punishment for attempting to defy the gods and not burying the body. Review These Study Questions for 'A Rose for Emily' A Rose for Emily is a favorite American short story by William Faulkner. Summary The narrator of this story represents several generations of men and women from the town. The story begins at the huge funeral for Miss Emily Grierson. Nobody has been to her house in 10 years, except for her servant. The town had a special relationship with Miss Emily ever since it decided to stop billing her for taxes in 1894. But, the newer generation wasnt happy with this arrangement, and so they paid a visit to Miss Emily and tried to get her to pay the debt. She refused to acknowledge that the old arrangement might not work anymore, and flatly refused to pay.Thirty years before, the tax collecting townspeople had a strange encounter with Miss Emily about a bad smell at her place. This was about two years after her father died, and a short time after her lover disappeared from her life. Anyhow, the stink got stronger and complaints were made, but the authorities didnt want to confront Emily about the problem. So, they sprinkled lime around the house and the smell was eventual ly gone. Everybody felt sorry for Emily when her father died. He left her with the house, but no money. When he died, Emily refused to admit it for three whole days. The town didnt think she was crazy then, but assumed that she just didnt want to let go of her dad. Next, the story doubles back and tells us that not too long after her father died Emily begins dating Homer Barron, who is in town on a sidewalk-building project. The town heavily disapproves of the affair and brings Emilys cousins to town to stop the relationship. One day, Emily is seen buying arsenic at the drugstore, and the town thinks that Homer is giving her the shaft, and that she plans to kill herself. When she buys a bunch of mens items, they think that she and Homer are going to get married. Homer leaves town, then the cousins leave town, and then Homer comes back. He is last seen entering Miss Emilys house. Emily herself rarely leaves the home after that, except for a period of half a dozen years when she gives painting lessons. Her hair turns gray, she gains weight, and she eventually dies in a downstairs bedroom. The story cycles back to where it began, at her funeral. Tobe, miss Emilys servant, lets in the town women and then leaves by the backdoor forever. After the funeral, and after Emily is buried, the townspeople go upstairs to break into the room that they know has been closed for 40 years.Inside, they find the corpse of Homer Barron, rotting in the bed.
